Good evening all. I am somewhat new to Mustangs. In the process of buying my first one, a 1967. I've known of this car for several years now and one thing that seems unusual are the headrests. I realize they weren't factory-installed. I am under the impression they may have been installed at the dealer. I'm fairly certain they were installed when the car was new (or nearly so). I've done a cursory search of the Internet using a broad range of terms but have come up with nothing. Ditto on this ConcoursMustang site. Was wondering if any experts/seasoned '67 Mustang veterans could chime in. I have to be honest, I plan to eventually remove them... they're not very attractive. But given the color match was curious if these were a dealer-installed Ford item or perhaps aftermarket. I did have a zoomed-in look to the limits of the resolution and it appears that the headrest vinyl "grain" doesn't match that of the seats. Thank you for looking.

The headrests are definitely not Ford. As to dealer installed, I doubt it. There are plenty of shops willing and capable of installing headrests. Sources for the item might include J. C. Whitney, or any of the many Mustang mail order houses. I've seen that style but I can't remember where or when.
What ever you do, have fun with your car. I took my 66 Fastback out for a spin today. I was very bold. I didn't take a mask. I enjoyed the ride.

Looks like I was wrong. The headrests were for Ford products 67 and on. OK, I've only owned 64 thru 66, and 69 and 70 Mustangs (the 69 and 70 had high back seats) so never considered a headrest add on. Surprisingly, there is no Ford logo on the headrests.

I appreciate the insight. Thank you. Roughly my conclusion but I wasn't entirely sure about the dealer-installed part. Regardless they'll be coming off. If you have a look at the topic "What is the best replacement tire for 185R14 Radial Ply wsw Rayon tires???" you'll see my two-cents worth along with a few inset photos of my father's then-new Raven Black '67 GT. Those photos were taken in September '67. Anyway for purely nostalgic reasons (and because a '67 fastback is my favorite Mustang) I searched for the most original '67 fastback I could find. Was torn between a black '67 S-Code GT and what I would have chosen "back in the day". Decided on a Brittany Blue 289/4-speed fastback that is incredibly original. I digress but I am looking forward to driving the wheels off of my first Mustang... and after those headrests come off ;) Thanks again.

Don,
I put a set of Cooper P225/60R14 tires on my 66 Hardtop daily driver several years back. (That was before Cooper Tires had some quality problems, they got their act together about 3 or 4 year ago.) That's the kind of tire I like. I don't worry about them. For more consistent running (it's a San Jose "A" code), I installed a Pertronix I ignition system. Again, no worries.
My 66 GT "K" Code fastback has a set of reproduction Uniroyal Dual Red Line 6.95-14 tires from Coker Tires https://www.cokertire.com/ That's a good source if you are looking for factory tires.

Thank you again for the insight! This car wears its original (and minty) 14" styled steel wheels. I had planned to fit a P195/75R14 white pinstripe tire in place of the white-letter 205/70 BFGs that were recently installed. An Internet search found photos a gorgeous Brittany Blue GT fastback with the dual red-pinstrip tires on the same wheels. Very tempting. The red stripes against the blue look nice. Was tempted to add a few GT touches but I decided against it. I will retrofit a fog light kit and GT valance. I think the car needs both. But no more... I want to personalize the car a little but at the same time respect its heritage, if that makes sense. A Pertronix upgrade will be in the works... a great tip. Your discussion hit pretty close to home. As an alternative I had been looking for a K-Code '66 fastback. Before his '67 GT dad ordered a black/black/white top K-Code '66 GT convertible from the Ford garage in Grantsville, MD. I'm sitting here in my [home] office with the owner's manual from that car. On the inside of the cover, under "Owner Identification"... written in black ink "6T08K..." along with the purchase date of "1 April 66". I used to see this car in my hometown until about the mid 1990s. Not sure where it went after the fellow my father sold the car to (in 1967) passed away. I've tried to look up the vin number but no luck. Would try my best to buy it back if it were ever possible. Again, I digress. I should be sleeping but am too excited at the prospect of picking up my "new" '67 fastback next week. Best regards and thanks you again for the conversation.

Those are a dealer installed accessory available from about 1968 on from your local Ford dealer. They were intended to be a retrofit for 1967 Ford products so I think the case can be made for them being somewhat correct for your car. They came in most factory colors. As to their attractiveness well I am not a fan.

The C8AZ Accessory Headrest Kit was not available as of May 1, 1967, but does show as being available as of October, 1967. That is as close as I can nail it down.
It was not to unusual that an Accessory with the next Model year's Part Number was introduced before that Model year, particularly if it would fit the current, or even prior, Model year.
The Accessory Headrest Kit typically associated with 1967 Model (as well as 1966), carried a C6AZ Part Number. It was considerably different than the C8 Kits. Pictures attached.
By October of 1967, both C6 and C8 Kits were shown applicable to '67's.
Hope this helps.

Is a clearer shot of the installation instructions available?
I have no personal need but if by chance I ever see a set installed on a car, it might help to also know how they were "supposed to be" installed.

I don't have a copy of the instructions but the installation must be complex and time consuming given the number of pieces involved. There are several sets in various colors for sale on eBay all the time - mostly the same ones being relisted over and over - a sign of how unpopular they are even today.

Again thanks to all for the insight. I just returned home with my "new" 1967 Mustang purchase. Here are a few detail photos of the headrest. As much as I want to remove them right away I'll probably leave them as-is until I'm ready to tackle repairs to the upholstery. A question I'm sure answered elsewhere on your site will be where best to source reproduction '67 Mustang parts. I'm sure there are vendors who offer good quality parts and at reasonable prices. And I'm sure there are others best avoided. I want to freshen a few minor things as well as add a fog light kit. But I'll save all this for future research elsewhere.

There are very few reproduction parts that are undetectable as reproductions generally. Some of the reproduction parts are at least functional but many are for the most part badly executed. The majority of these non functional parts are made overseas in places like China or Taiwan or Korea. Regardless of who you buy these reproduction parts from or what you pay many are so defective as to be useless. In general it is best to either restore original parts, find NOS parts, or use NIS service replacement parts.
