After looking and buying a few 9" carrier to housing gaskets I found one I like.
It looks a lot like the Ford black gasket, is twice as thick as the paper gasket NAPA sells and is made from high tech gasket material:

These guys, Detroit Muscle Technologies LLC, mostly do MOPARs but I like their gasket!

Unfortunately for our focus this one appears to have the name of the material provider plastered all over (guess its both sides) the gasket and that may be visible thought and around the edges of the third member unlike the original plan gasket
Might improve it the gasket was painted or dyed and hopefully the increased thickness is not a detail that sticks out. Just some observations

The gasket on my 3rd member -- which appears to never been apart and still had the original copper washers -- was quite thick. About as thick as this new gasket.
The NAPA and other gaskets are extremely thin -- they are half the thickness.
0.0175 vs 0.350 for the Ford and this gasket.
I'll post a pic of this gasket on the third member so you can judge how large it is.

I took a picture from Perkin's article on rebuilding a 9". I know not to use the details for my car, but the Ford gasket is shown on a cleaned up housing. I put this Detroit gasket on my housing and the fit is very close to the Perkins.
The new gasket only has writing on the one side.
In the next pic I show the new gasket with a NAPA gasket. Wrong color, wrong thickness.
If anyone has an original Ford gasket I'd be interested in its thickness.

From your earlier post I didn't understand that the factory (gasket maker) markings were only one side.
Makes allot if difference ;) Sorry don't have and original gasket to compare.

A lot of times I'll take a pic in the shop and then post while in the house many hours later. I didn't know the backside was plain either!

That super thin paper gasket is what I found when I took the diff out of my very original '69 Mach 1 that I sold recently.

I could not find the 9” stash, perhaps all sold. But for NOS C9OZ-4035-A the thickness is 0.0325”. Pictures attached. Maybe this helps...maybe adds confusion. Hopefully the former

I like how you put the gasket on items that have a color we can identify.
The thickness is in line with the one I took off my housing. I thought it was original based on other clues such as copper washers that few seem to put back on, original axle seals and bearings and original pinion gasket. I understand those are all clues and not definitive. ;)

Bossbill is 100% correct. I just took delivery of a couple of these gaskets upon his recommendation. They're clearly the best I've seen/purchased in a long time.

OLD topic, however I am now realizing I screwed a few things up on my rear axle.
I am planning on using this gasket.

This is the first time I have messed with working on a rear axle.
Did the factory use any sealant in conjunction with the gasket originally?? If not, should I use some now?
(I am pulling mine apart...for some dumb reason I though nothing was used......)
Also, when I pressed new bearings on the 31 spline axles I didn't buy new sleeves, I just used the smaller seal used on the 28 spline axles as I didn't know you could buy them at the time.
Will this cause any problems? Should I go ahead and get the sleeves and correct seals while the thing is apart to fix my first mistake :)

Don't know if I have those Assembly Manuals, but have you checked there in the notes?

That is not covered in the Osborn Assembly Manuals as the item was delivered to the line as a complete assembly. The "best" reference would be the service manual, as Ford Car Parts (aka MPC) usually does not include an assembly sequence, just a "this" goes "there" reference.

For reference my April 1969 MPC lists the gasket for 9" and 9 3/8" carriers as B7A 4035-A. Apparently after the April 1969 revision the part number was changed on that gasket.
I could not find the 9” stash, perhaps all sold. But for NOS C9OZ-4035-A the thickness is 0.0325”. Pictures attached. Maybe this helps...maybe adds confusion. Hopefully the former

The axle assembly drawing is a 1970 revision. I don't see any reference to sealant either in the illustrations or in the MPC so I doubt Ford used any.

Yes would not expect it to be reflected on the exploded view illustrations. Thanks for looking into the subject - both of you :)

I would recommend you take a quality flat edge to the housing to see how flat it is. On my 66, it was nearly 0.050 out, and the gasket could not stop the leak. If you have to use sealant, keep the amount small and out of sight.

The place where they are prone to leak is if you do not use the copper crush washers like the factory.
