Title: Pop Open Gas Cap
Post by: Bossbill on November 29, 2018, 03:44:21 PM
My 67 pop open gas cap has a really nice flip open piece (the part with the spring sealing component), but the  locking lever and outer ring could use a re-chrome.

I'm not sure taking pieces from a repop will give me the result I want. I wonder if the spring loaded locking lever is the same size and fit as my original?
I gather the part that screws to the car will fit my original flip open cap?

If we re-chrome, has anyone been able to take the flip open piece and remove the spring and sealing cap and be able to reassemble them after chrome?

Or are NOS pieces the same price as a re-chrome with less effort?

Ok, I PMed Richard and bought some pieces.
Thanks Richard!

But, the question remains about the pop open piece and how to dismantle.

The center cap does come out (pressed in at factory assembly) but I couldn't figure out a way to pull it out without damaging it. I suppose if a person were to sacrifice the outer portion of a donor cap, you could reverse-press the center out, hopefully undamaged. I have not tried this yet but it was the only way I came up with in my brain. You of course could then drill the center to gain access to that hidden screw, now having a good disc to send out for plating.
