Title: Water Pumps
Post by: MustangAndFairlane1867 on May 17, 2018, 07:52:25 PM
I'm trying to determine the month and year that Ford discontinued aluminum water pumps for the vintage Hi-Po Mustangs and began installing cast iron water pumps instead. Thanks, Ron

I think I found the answer to my water pump post above:  Ford switched to cast iron water pumps and timing chain covers on the early Mustangs at change L-8, which I believe puts it at May of 1965.  Got this from page 30 of Tony Gregory's book.  Thanks, Ron

Follow up to my follow up:  I see that Scott Drake is selling aluminum water pumps w/o backing plate for $48.99, and a matching aluminum timing chain cover for $137.95.  They look "period correct" in the online pictures, and SD says in the details that both pieces are "concourse correct," or words to that effect.  Has anyone heard differently or tried a set?  I need both of these items for my K car (San Jose/February 16) and am considering them for my application.  Thanks, Ron

Keep in mind that just like the Aluminum hipo waterpumps the cast iron hipo waterpumps had the internal impeller that was specific for a hipo and different then a regular non hipo cast iron waterpump.

Per the book "Mustang and Ford Small Block V8, 1962-1969" by Bob Mannel (a very good source), change L-8 was implemented May 1965 thru August 1965 (a date range of actual engine tags). It should have a casting number of C5AE-8505-C. Later date coded pumps should/may have a "-D" cast over the "-C". Those are service pumps. Just be advised.
