I am in the process of installing the axles on a 31 spline nine inch rear. For some reason it appears that the axle seals are not riding against the axle shaft. They are too large. I don't see how they can possibly seal this way. I am looking at the original seals and the new ones are the same size??? Do the seals ride on the shafts themselves or are they supposed to seal on the locking ring?? Or is this just normal?

Your axle does not have the added sleave ? The 9" axle with the sleave uses the 1.5 ID seal. The 9" axle without the sleave uses the 1.365 seal. The part numbers are NAPA. Brian

ahhhh... My axle did have the sleeves. I found them. One of mine is damaged. Is it mandatory to use the sleeves on the 31 spline axles or would it be ok to just use the smaller diameter seal?
-
I would just go with the smaller seal. Be sure the seal is correctly installed or the bearing retainer will rub on it. Brian

Brian, great job on the pictures and info.I saved the info on the Napa seals to my files for future reference also.

Yes,
Thanks again Brian! I ordered the smaller seals and will go that route.

The splined end on the 31 spline axle is a little larger than the 28 spline. Therefore a larger inside dia. seal. The 28 spline seal will fit but lub it up and slide the spline in carefully and don't nick the seal or you will have a leak..

Happy to share. Good advice from DD. Brian
