I haven't seen this particular change-over discussed here before (and didn't find it with the search tool either).
Does anybody know the approximate transition dates for the change from the early style air vent to the later style (see image below)? I'm particularly interested in the San Jose plant, but wouldn't mind learning the change-over dates for the Dearborn and Metuchen cars as well...
A few reference points - my '67 Convertible was built in San Jose on Sept. 22, 1966 and has the early style. My old '67 Fastback was built in San Jose on March 28, 1967, and it had the later style. Hopefully we can narrow this down further!

I believe my 11/2/66 (actual) produced SJ has the LATER version pictured. That should narrow down the sample pool some ;)

Dec 20 SJ late style. This is a new one for me, did not know of a difference!

John, You've already been "trumped" (by over 6 weeks!) ...but Likewise...I hadn't heard of this before either, the earlier (metal?) one looks more like the 66-down variety.
So at this point we would need to narrow the sample pool below 41 days to better understand this detail.
I understand we need "more than just one example of unrestored" to be accurate so for the record, my 11/02/66 example is to the best of my knowledge, "unrestored" since I have owned it since '78 and am absolutely sure it has not been changed since then.

Thanks for the info guys! Yes, it definitely looks like a carry-over item from 1966 production. I did notice that there's a date stamping on the bottom of mine. It was a little hard to read, so I stuck a little bit of silicone putty up inside the vent. After it cured, I found that the date was "8 25"...

10/14/66 metal style

Thanks Tim.
For others viewing this subject came up on the SAAC site do have been looking into San Jose production specifically for this effort and will start a new thread on just those and transfer/include data posted in this thread to help build out that look into this production running change. As a preview it appears we have it narrowed to within a two week period. Will start a couple of other threads to focus on the other two plants to see if we can narrow those change over periods also
