Interior Courtesy Lamp (below glove box)
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:07:16 PM »
I ran across an old picture taken during dissassembly (below) indicating the passenger side courtesy lamp was mounted at the center glove box door hinge bolt.  In contrast, the assembly manual specifies this lamp should be mounted at the far right bolt (closest to the passenger door). I am wondering which location is believed to be most common (original).

You've got the longer bracket and location associated with A/C.  From the looks of your firewall, looks correct.

The closer to passenger door location is for non-A/C and the distance from screw to lamp is shorter.

Hmmmmm, very interesting. You're saying the longer light bracket was used for AC-cars.... I did not know that. I though all cars had this longer bracket on the passenger side, and the shorter light bracket was used on the driver's side. This car is a non-AC car and I was this first person (to my knowledge) to ever take the car apart. You can see in the phot I had just unplugged the wire, but then stopped to take a picture before I unbolted it.

So, if you're right and I understand your comment, then I'm in one of those situations where I have to decide whether or not to put it back the way I found it, VS the way perhaps it was supposed to have been???

Upon first glance it looked like the oblong plate in the firewall was punched out, and I thought you had A/C.  Now I see that it is not the case.

I found only two pictures of this area, both attached here.  These are both AC cars, and both "short".

I think we need more to chime in on this one.

Revision - added third picture of a non-AC car, the light is short also.

Thanks for the pics!!! :-)

Page 22 of osborn electrical assembly manual shows one short and one long light bracket. The text says long bracket right side only and indicates clostest mounting hole to passenger door. My pic during assembly shows center mounting hole.

Don't have a ton of underdash pictures in the collecction (too busy taking body, undercarriage and engine compartment ones) But looking through the pictures to see if I had any for another request I too found short armed lights on the passenger side on AC cars on three (all I had for that year and plant) more examples

Thanks for looking and commenting Jeff. At this moment, given the information in the assembly manual and my pictures of this car prior to diss-assembly, I feel strongly that I should put the "long arm" light fixture back where I found it on the passenger side, center bolt. That said, I'd still like to gather feedback and others' observations for my own education. :-)

I have always found short bracket with AC cars. Whats interesting is that my experience is they are not attached to glove box hinge bolt at all but with zinc dichromate phillips like passenger side to a hole just to the right of glove box hinge. I'm speaking about 68 NJ cars almost exclusively

+1 for 67-68 Metuchen built mustangs on type and location. In fact I have never seen an original courtesy light mounting for 67-68s from any of the assembly plants using the glove box hinge bolt until the pictures posted by 67GT289. I would like to see more pictures  of mustangs showing this method.

Thanks Pete.  For reference the three instrument cluster pics are from 7F01C129xxx, 7T01C144, and 7R02C165.  Both the F and T cars were attached to a glove box door screw.  The R is as TLea said on a dedicated screw to the right of the glove box hinge.

OK Pete - going to take a while to go through all the files - haven't been focusing on pictures of under dash shots ;)

A couple from the 67 Mustang period  Both AC - one on the hinge one to the passenger side of hinge

7F01C1291xx  - looks like the same car as #2 above ;)

So 7T01C144 is on a glove box door screw, and there is no unused hole between the door and the AC vent assembly, which would rule out someone moving things around after it left the factory.

But that is only one, so I will defer to the others that have put hands and eyes on more cars than me.

What about the short vs. long housing perspective? Any observations noted?  Picture below.

I think the long were on non AC cars but would not rule out a short on a non AC car if they happened to be out of the long.
