Put together a new write up on battery heat shields.  There is some new information in here....if anyone has anything else let us know.  Questions, comments, and suggestions always welcome.

Marcus,

Very nice article. What is your opinion on 71 Boss 351 & 429 CJ?

Bob P - My opinion is that I cant document that the Boss 351 or a 429CJ came with the heat shield.  Unless its a 429 with AC, it doesn't appear these cars came with a battery heat shield.

Marcus I think the long c7ob uncut version was on 67-69 fairlanes  only & never on mustang-cougar with a/c as I have never seen a long uncut version on mustang yet but some people think if your mustang-cougar had A/C it got long version.. Recently seen a 68 1 owner torino 390 A/C with grey long c7ob shield in place & have found several long c7ob with top rear end corner cut off on big block A/C 67-69 t-birds & lincolns in yards. Have had many talks with bruce about doob shields & you would think with doob engineering # it was first designed for 70 torino but 71 mustangs have have dooe eng. # on some parts. The 70 428cj mustang -cougar has some dooe eng.# parts also.  The 67-70mustang-cougar battery mounts next to rad but torinos & 71 mustangs battery mounts at an angle with a bigger gap between battery & rad. The doob shield has a curved lip on end by rad support ofwhich I think was designed to route cool air coming thru rad support hole around battery to front of battery in the gap between battery & shield. I think that is also why the c70b shield has the hump on rad support end to help route cool air around battery OR was shield designed to keep hot engine air off battery only or BOTH?  I have only seen the grey version first then black showing up later  unlike the trunk luggage strip protector black first then grey showing up in late 68.

Thanks Ed for your input....and yes it does seem that the Mustang heat shields were generally cut from everything I have seen and heard.  I need to change the wording from "dark grey" to "black" as most people refer to the later shields as black.  Already had a few people ask about that.

Have you seen the -A shield before?

Marcus, I believe "Dark Grey" is correct terminology. I have not seen a black one other than a repop. I have a few NOS and several assy line originals and they are "Dark Grey". I think it is important to use correct terminology whenever possible.

Marcus the c7zb-a shield don't make much sense with the 2 holes on top as the hole in corner would go under posi battery cable lug & hold shield in place when using hold down plate that bolts to lower end of battery ear (notch cut out on lower end of shield) for cars that didn't use top hold down bracket with j-bolts as the top bracket holds shield in place. But what about the outer hole as that hole would be used only on a reversed post battery & they are usually mounted on the lh side of car.  Just guessing here but where did you get the A shield from & what car?

Would guess that like the other versions the -A was designed to fit multiple cars. The features you mentioned and the possible issues is likely why they redesigned it to a form that was used for may years.

Many of the -Bs have the -A cast into the inner surface but the mold makers crossed it out and replaced the letter so they at least reused a number of the sections of the -A molds for A while

I actually found someone who had this -A shield....but it was never mounted in a car.  I didnt believe it existed until I saw pictures of it and have pictures of the box it was shipped in from Ford in June of 1967.  So thats why I cant say if it was ever actually used in a production car.  But it does finally prove that at least for a short time there was some of these -A versions that existed before being replaced by the -B version.

I've got a engine compartment picture from I believe a Shop Tip issue

Surprising what we have pictures of sometimes ;)

Sorry for the scan quality - enlarged just the battery area for the post - apparently a 67 San Jose 390 Fairlane with Thermactor

Thats great Jeff.  Im still not sure it made it to any production vehicles, but first picture like that I have seen.  Good find.
Do you know what issue or year of Shop Tips?  I assume a 67?
