Factory painted wheels / Dealer Painted wheels
« on: December 07, 2011, 09:34:58 AM »
Dear all,

I have seen some nice restored mustangs with wheels in body colour.
Does anyone  know if this was a dealer option or a factory option.
If yes, what would the discription of the marti repport be ?
if No, is this just a custom paint or has it some origins.

Not a dealer option (though a dealer would paint anything any color you wanted to make a sale I'm sure) instead painted wheels (matching the exterior color) were standard with the buyer only wanted the cheap little (dog dish) hub caps. Very unpopular.

We have seen some original cars with full hubcaps and the painted wheels (looked odd IMHO) but paperwork shows that those cars were ordered with the cheap small hubcaps but dealers put on and charged the buyer for full size hubcaps. Sort of a 60's up selling. Again very unusual and unpopular

I may be wrong but I'm almost sure all 70 Mach1's had black painted wheels unless they were optioned with the argent styled steel wheel. My CJ car was ordered with trim rings/caps ant the wheels were black (on a white car)  I think the body colored wheels where only on cars with 14x6 inch wheels and dog dish caps w/o trim rings.

I believe that is what J_speegle is saying mr70CJ428,

but, if choosen for hubcaps only, would the discrition then be "hubcaps" or would it include something like wheels in body colour ?
Okay, that gives me some proof that there where factory cars with factory colours wheels !

thanks

Sorry should have asked some clarifying questions to begin with

Are you asking specifically about 70 Mach Is only?

Makes all the difference in the answer - my first response was across many of the years and not specific to 70 Mach I's

but, if chosen for hubcaps only, would the discrition then be "hubcaps" or would it include something like wheels in body colour ?

More questions so we can focus in on your questions as the original one was not specific

"would the description then be.."

Are you referring to what the buildsheet, Marti Report, dealer paper work, shipping invoice or some other official document would say?  If so which one since they all used different terminology.

no no, not Mach1

lets say: A custumor orders a white car with hubcaps, does he need to ask for painted white weels or does he get this automaticly with ordering the hubcaps.

what would have been on the buildsheet and / or marti repport. thats my main "concern".

Since there is a discussion that mentioned painted wheels in the 67-68 section they are all starting to blur together I guess.

no no, not Mach1

lets say: A customer orders a white car with hubcaps, does he need to ask for painted white wheels or does he get this automatically with ordering the hubcaps.

If the customer order did not order nor want the up-graded hubcaps the car would be built with body colored wheels from our understanding. They did not get a choice (though an "adjustment" could always be made at the dealership) of having black wheels or body colored ones. That was not a regular production option

Here is an example of a standard hubcap car

And a couple of original spares from standard hubcap cars

As you can see only the front of the wheel was painted to match the body color

what would have been on the buildsheet and / or marti repport. that's my main "concern".

How the buildsheet was marked for the standard hubcap cars is part of the discussion in the other thread

http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=3900.new#new

Its possible that its a P in the wheel box

As far as a Marti report I have not seen a standard wheel car's Marti Report yet but would expect that it would show nothing since Kevin list the accessory's and options and since it was neither it would not be listed. What you might find is a lack of any mention of full hubcaps, wire hubcaps or styled steel wheels
