1966 rear spring 6 cyl
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:27:06 AM »
With the recent thread on front spring stripes, I thought I would add photos of the markings I found on my 66 6 cyl Sprint coupe rear springs. The car has a scheduled build date of July 7, 1966 in Dearborn. It is an automatic, with factory air and no PS or PB. Hope this helps others. Click on photos to enlarge.

From notes I made during restoration, the pumpkin had several markings......

Looking from front of car, a large "4" was written in white on the top of the pumpkin

Looking from front of car, a "28" was written in white on left side of pumpkin

Looking from rear of car, a large"7" was written on the bottom of the unit

A large yellow "X" was written on pumpkin cover

Hope this helps.

I would recommend cleaning your parts and noting what details you find on your car.  That way your car is correct and not a hodge-podge of details that aren't necessarily applicable to your car.

Kevin could you provide the engineering number for the springs? I've found this a better way to catalog and trace the application rather than by just the time, place and options.

Thanks

Jeff:

It will take me a few days to get this. Am I corrrect that this number will be stamped on the spring itself?

Kevin,

Did you reproduce any of the paint markings you found when you did your restoration?

Pete:

The attached list of markings was found on my suspension during the restoration in the late 90s. All markings were duplicated except for the stencil on the driveshaft. I took measurements and tried my best to duplicate the markings as they originaaly appeared.

Kevin

FORD MOTOR COMPANY USED MANY COLOR CODING COMBINATIONS TO AID IN ASSEMBLY OF THE MUSTANG. SINCE THIS RESTORATION WAS DONE ON A TOTALLY ORIGINAL, LOW MILEAGE CAR, MANY OF THESE COLOR MARKINGS WERE STILL VISIBLE AFTER CLEANING THE COMPONENTS. I HAVE RECONSTRUCTED ALL COLOR MARKINGS AS FOUND ON THE CAR.

THE FRONT SPRINGS HAD A BRIGHT GREEN STRIPE RUNNING ALMOST TOP TO BOTTOM.
THE STEERING LINKAGE HAD THREE PAINT DAUBS, PINK, GREEN AND BLUE.
THE STEERING STOPS HAD A GREEN DAUB ON THE SIDE FACING THE ENGINE.
THE PITMAN ARM HAD THREE DAUBS, TWO GREEN AND ONE BLUE.
THE PUMPKIN ASSEMBLY HAD SEVERAL MARKINGS... AS LOOKING FROM FRONT OF CAR, A LARGE "4" WAS WRITTEN IN WHITE ON THE TOP OF THE ASSEMBLY.
AS LOOKING FROM FRONT OF CAR, A "28" WAS WRITTEN IN WHITE ON LEFT SIDE OF PUMPKIN.
WITH PUMPKIN IN PLACE, A LARGE "7" WAS WRITTEN ON BOTTOM OF UNIT, AS VIEWED FROM THE REAR.
A LARGE YELLOW "X" WAS WRITTEN ON THE COVER .
THE REAR SPRINGS HAD SEVERAL WHITE STRIPES ON BOTH SIDES.
THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD TWO 1" WIDE STRIPES, ONE GREEN, AND THE OTHER WHITE.
THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD THE FOLLOWING CODE STENCILED IN YELLOW" 10078-5 W.

Glad I wrote this down back then, cause I never would have remembered it today!

Hope this helps.

Kevin,

Can you provide the dimensions of the white paint strips; one looks a bit wider than the other?
