You know..All this talk about radio noise surpressors got me thinking... In the Ford Shop manuals, They show for '65 and '66 ...a static type noise surpressor also installed underneath the Front Bearing cups on 6cyl, and 8 cyl cars... You know all these years, I have never come accross one of these damn things..!!!  Anyone ever seen one under the front wheel bearing cups???

Tony K.

For the life of me, I don't understand how the noise suppressor inside the front bearing cups would work from an electrical perspective...it's a weird design, that's for sure!

Yes I have seen them and pulled them out of junk yard wreaked cars before. They were also used on later year cars as well . Probably tossed out the first time the wheel bearing got repacked. Bob

Here's an explanation I found:

Static electricity is generated by automotive vehicle tires during operation, and causes interference with radio reception when the electrical potential is great enough to cause spark discharge and ionization of air rather than low voltage dissipation through an electrically conductive path.

A '65 with a factory radio should have had 2 suppresors.
Yes, but would a 64 1/2(June,65 built) have any suppressors at all ?

Yes two of them if you have a radio. One on the Generator and the second by the voltage regulator.

For 1965 cars equipped with radios, two condensers were used, a C5TA-18827-A1 mounted on the alternator, and C3SA-18832-A mounted at the voltage regulator. The alternator ones mount was located in the center and is hard to find. The VR mounted one is marked with the part number stamped around the edge of the base in a semi-circle at the top and the number "648" in an oval in the center. No other marking is present on any samples I have.
In 1966 the part number was changed to C6OA-18832-A, marked the same way as the 65 one but included FOMOCO in script around the edge opposite the part number. Later versions had AUTOLITE in capital letters located in the center preceeded by a logo and 648 on the bottom in a circle. The VR condenser's mount is located at the end opposite the lead. The service part number for the VR condenser is C6OZ-18832-A which was replaced by D5AZ-18832-A. You may (repeat may) get a condenser marked C6OA-18832-A if you can find a NOS D5AZ-18832-A.
For 1964 Mustangs two were used but I don't have any marking or mounting info, just part numbers: C3AA-18827-A on the alternator one, and C3AA-18832-A for the VR one. As generators and generator voltage regulators were different from alternator equipped cars that the mounting tabs are different for condensers.
I've found two anti-static "springs" on bearing caps over the years. There was an I-6 version and a V-8 version (different bearing cap sizes). I believe that they were tossed when wheel bearing were serviced (too messy). I think that two were required and their use was discontinued for 1966 Mustangs.

That the condenser. Did you dig that alternator out of a sand pile?  ;)

Thanks, for the info!

Amazing how much original stuff I find on this car.  I pretty sure some of the grime is original too!   ;)

Looks like Dearborn 65 dirt, found on other cars built around the same date.  ;D
