68 Running change - 390 GT intake Big"S" or Little "s"
« on: May 21, 2019, 09:11:48 AM »
Hello everyone have search a few forums but haven't come up with a definitive answer.
What is the correct intake for a 68 GT/CS "S" code that has a build date of 3/26/28 for the driven concourse class.
Would the intake have the little "s" or the Big "S" on the number 1 runner and would the last letter need to be an A or D (example C8AE-9425-A or D) could it have the F or G.
Are the Big S and the little s the same and just a plant/patternmakers variation?
Thanks for the help

First would offer that I've not collected allot of data points related to this subject (maybe someone else has) and they are difficult to see on fully assembled cars so pictures are not helping much.

Hello everyone have search a few forums but haven't come up with a definitive answer.
What is the correct intake for a 68 GT/CS "S" code that has a build date of 3/26/28 for the driven concourse class.

If your only focused on a specific judging class the bar is not that high and allot of the details you mention would likely not be a concern. But if your restoring car and the focus is how the car was built (more of our focus here ;) lets see if we can help out.

As mentioned don't have a list of cars, intakes, engineering numbers and date codes for a bunch of cars to offer and don't know of one and it does not appear anyone has taken up the task of making one

What I can offer - Not knowing for sure if these are original to the car but maybe one or two of the examples will be from a similar time period as your car and you can at least use that to move forward. Of course if you find an intake with a appropriate date then that will likely help also.

Short list as allot of cars I have pictures of have aluminum intakes, hoses, Thermactor parts, air cleaners and other parts in the way :(

8F03S1143xx has a small S intake
8T02S1331xx has a large S intake  Dec 67 engine assembly date
8T02S201xxx has a large S intake
8R02S1096xx has a small S intake
8R01S1565xx has a large S intake
8R01S1626xx has a large S intake
8R01S1626xx has a large S intake casting date-8D 5/16/68 real build date

For others examples of both the small and large "S" intake casting mark.

Small

Large

Sorry don't have anything to go on to see if the two were cast at two different plants or if they were simply two (or more)  different molds made at different times

Suggest that if you want something close and you have the original block check the assembly date for it then look for an appropriate dated intake and that should guide you to either a small, large or both intake from that period if both were being made at the same time period. It's a place to start
