Need help with 66 exhaust trumpets

Trying to go to the gallery for photos of the correct positioning of exhaust trumpets for a 1965. Can't seem to get the gallery to come up. Just wondering what I am doing wrong.

Hmm not sure if your going to find much of anything there. The subject has been discussed a number of times but posters (did a search) choose to describe not post pictures of the positioning.  Unfortunately I believe most original systems have been replaced and factory pictures are mostly of preproduction cars used for advertising.

Will look through my pictures at some point and see if I can offer something

Who made the system? I've used aftermarket and NOS components on several 65-66 Mustangs. Both varieties required "tweaking" (aftermarket a lot). The trumpets have different bends for each side which might be part of the problem. Most aftermarket exhaust pipes are a bit long because it's easier to "trim" length than to "add". NOS pipes should have a bump and the next component a slot for alignment. Aftermarket mostly do not. I've seen Scott Fuller's systems and they seem to fit well, expensive but they fit.

For what it's worth, attached is a copy of an ad from November, 1965, showing the Exhaust Extensions. While this ad is for 1966 Models (note the front end shown with the 1966 "License Plate"), the rear shot showing the Exhaust Extensions appears to be from a 1965 (notice the Gas Cap). As Jeff mentioned, most ads used pre-production photos.

I have seen that photo. The same photo is in the '65 mustang sales brochure. They just look a little too far out from the valance. One poster said to line up the weld line at the stainless where it meets the steel pipe, and position it over the bottom bolt in the exhaust escutcheon. That seems to position it about right.

Remember (as always) that the measurements and instructions are only what the engineers and Ford wanted the workers to do at the time when the drawing was produced, not what workers did in the real world nor does it represent any changes of corrections Ford may have done in the days, weeks or months that follow. Evaluate, consider all the fact you've been able to collect and make the best choice for today. Might need to adjust later if new or better information becomes available

Picture of the trumpets on my car.  Wasn't thinking of concours correct when adjusting them just set them where I thought they looked best.  I set the outer face of the trumpet pretty close to even with the top outer face of the trim ring.  Center the trumpet in the opening.   Brian

Yours fit like mine do, sort of centered - but.
I've seen this question asked many times and the only answer I've found was they need to be "centered". However, the answer how far in or out has remained elusive. My own opinion is the tip to muffler weld must be inside the trim ring which would be the furthest out to the rear extension, and for how far in they should be seems to be the rear most part of the tip would be even with the forward edge of the rear bumper. Confused? Look at the weld, and look at the bumper when installed.

Here's are two pictures of exhaust tips, my 65 GT Fastback and my 66 GT Fastback. The 65 sticks out too far, the weld is almost visible at the bottom of the trim ring. The 66 sticks in too far, maybe 1/2 inch. Draw an imaginary line up to the forward edge of the rear bumper.
Both exhausts are on my list of things to do.
