Differential markings - 65 SJ FB
« on: February 24, 2016, 10:10:09 PM »
I'm hoping someone might be able to piece together what these markings were in their entirety.  Member must of been painted black at some point by some work done, so had to use some paint stripper lightly to get it off.  Any idea what they could be?  San Jose Oct 64 car.  fastback, A code, automatic transmission, axle code 1 (3.00:1)

First pic is the top of the rear end (11 maybe?)
Second is the bottom (looks like an 8 )
Third is the passenger side of the rear end (blue mark)
Fourth is also the passenger side but more towards the front (green mark)

If you clean it carefully and soak in evapo-rust, most all of the original markings will show up.

Not sure if I'll be able to get the black paint off without damaging what is underneath it. Also looks like another white mark at the top. Anyone have something similar? Tried doing a web search in Google for third member details and only the same cars come up. Also reaching out to a friend in Tucson who's car is built a month after mine to see what he has.

For this time period this application here is what I typically find

Looking straight on from the front

At 12-1 o'clock a single or double digit number likely an assembler or inspector number. Normally much neater application that the mark below. May indicate an applicator (bottle and ball) than used there. Yellows and whites (sometimes an orange) often seen. In some example the two digits are two separate number applied at different times - possibly different workers

At 9 o'clock another two digit number likely an assembler or inspector number. Not unusual that one finds drips and runs down that side of the case possibly from that application as it seems that that one was applied with a paint brush or something similar. Often much brighter colors - lavenders, pinks, bright blues .....

At 5 o'clock I often find a "8" or a "Q"

Those marks you found are very typical of what I've found on similar cars.  The green paint higher up on the passenger side is different from other examples I've seen

While your at it check the yoke and the pinion retainer and shield washer behind the yoke

Thanks Jeff.  I didn't find anything else.  My best guess is the blue is probably an 11 of some type along with whatever was left of the top number.  The green mark also looks like a 1 as well as there was no other green in the area.  The 8 at the 5 o'clock position was by far the best one that came out.  I also found some red underneath where the u bolt goes on the driver side.  Is that common?  I didn't see any indication the rear end has ever been out of the car.  All the bushings from the rear shackle all have small ford logos on the inside portion.

On the end of the housing drivers side don't have another example with a red mark in that location. Have San Jose and Dearborn 8" housings with white or yellow numbers out at the U bolt locations. Maybe they were using red that day on your car

Found another marking. This time on the top of the housing at around 1 o'clock in a light greenish blue. Appears to be 48.

Did you ever find a second rotation number on the car?  If so how does it compare to this number considering it a SJ built car?

For your car, year and plant ;)

Seats, hood, radiator support, taillight panel behind bumper, fuse box, top of transmission, could be back of quarter panel trim, gauge cluster, door panels, for a start

Fuse box says 22 from what I can tell.  Unfortunately the car was repainted prior to us getting it in 1992 so the hood and taillight panel are no good.  Radiator support was repainted when the engine was rebuilt in 2004  :(  I don't remember anything written on the fiberglass panels when we took them out to do the carpet.  I can check the door panel perhaps...Driver or passenger side?  Front seats were recovered again before 1992.  Backseat is original.

We've seen where only two of the three (if there were three) digits were written on the fuse box.

Either and or both door panels

Try the rear seat bottom cushion on the end as it faces the quarter panel trim panel. Might still be there or gone :(

Any suggestions on how to remove the pumpkin from the housing?  All the nuts are off and it is not budging.  There was a lot of some kind of sealer around the edge between both surfaces and noticed they had forgotten to put the copper washers (and axle tag) back when they re-assembled it.  There isn't much to pry on to pull it apart...
