Topic: 1969 Mustang "E"conomy package

Does anyone know or have any information on the 69 Mustang "E"conomy package? Like info from Ford or past magazine info. I've Googled and tried the "search'' feature here and also went on other forums, and no luck. I already know about the 2.33:1 ratio gears, the special torque converter, "L" engine code 250 I6, and Marti reports of a mere 96 made in 69.

Any info would be appreciated.

I knew they had super high rearend gears, but I never realized they had a different torque converter too.  It looks like you've seen most of the web sites and other info that I've run across over the years.

In the book "Mustang 40 years" by Randy Jeffingwell the "E" model is mentioned as a sportsroof with special automatic transmission and the 2.31:1 rear end. Sugested retail price of $2,905. Only one was built and it was Ford's entry in the 1968 Mobil Gas Economy Run.

We're not talking about the same one, rharlan. There were 96 of the '69 Mustang "E" sportsroofs built, according to Marti. And the rear gear ration was 2.33:1 on all 96 of them. In fact, only the Mustang "E"s in '69 received the 2.33:1 gears.

One of the biggest things we're looking for is a good close up of the "Mustang E" quarter panel decal.

I've always found it interesting that the writer included that car and the info in that very early written book. In that one he appears to have just driven around his local area taking pictures of cars sitting in parking lots and in driveways.  Then assuming that what he found was often original - not something that worked out in all cases.

In the case where he was writing about "older" cars during that period he would attend a show and use the pictures he took there as the basis for much of the book.

From memory believe the author's name is/was Walter Miller

Actually it is Ray Miller :-) I got that book even before I got my first Mustang in -81.

Hmmm, 1981? I'd say that many cars/Mustangs he took photos of were still original. At least still maintaining their original paint, interior, drivetrain, etc.,

UPDATE: I Googled Ray Miller, and WOW, I've got that book, "Mustang does it".  Had it for about 30 years now. Cool book, very informative. Thanks fast66 for the info

Very correct - mixed his name with another authors name. Since he shot allot of the pictures in southern Calif there were plenty that could not be used since they were modified and then sometimes little things got by him and into print. Consider that by the time the book came out we were already restoring the early cars (many clubs only allowed 65-66's in the club and for judging).

Trying to correct the 65-66 fastback styled steel wheels (67 Cougar styled steel wheels that some one added to their car in one set of pictures)  took a while since, often, people tend to believe what they see printed  as fact. But yes in general most of the cars he used were unaltered.


I met the author back during the same time period as he shot and included one of my families cars in one of his other books.
